Testing CF3

Hello fellow Curvers,

I’ll be going through the process of what we’re doing in the office before and around our testing sessions. Since we’re working on CF3, which is a big project, I’ll be breaking it down.

Step 1: The vision

The last couple of months we’ve been very busy defining what should become the next Curve Fever experience. Not only do we need to move away from Flash, we also want to make CF3 a bigger and better game. Therefore we’re focusing on the following aspects:

  • New technology and server infrastructure.
  • Better accessibility
  • More gameplay depth and variety
  • Personalization
  • Progression
  • Monetization

Step 2: Ideas

During this process we had brainstorms, lots of sketches and tons of ideas written down. A fraction of these ideas seemed realistic and something that would fit and actually make Curve Fever better. These ideas were realized in a CF3 gameplay prototype. This...

Exhibition ‘Indievelopment’

Hey Curvers,

About two weeks ago we attended a gaming event called ‘Indievelopment’. Indievelopment is a gaming exhibition where gaming companies come together and show people the games they are currently working on.

People can try out all the different games shown at the event and give their feedback to the developers. But this wasn’t the only thing Indievelopment had to offer. There also were known people from the gaming industry who gave presentations and shared their knowledge about gaming.

Our team also set up a booth for Curve Fever and showed Curve Fever to everyone who passed by. This was the first time for us to attend such an event and we had a great time doing it!
We met a lot of fans, introduced people to Curve Fever and had cool conversations with other game developers.

We learned a lot from the crowd, the presentations and other developers. The conversations also led...

Quick Play (coming soon)

Hello fellow Curvers,

Recently, we’ve been looking at things that could be improved in the game. The controls are easy to understand, you can login as a guest, it’s pretty user-friendly but some things are still difficult. Starting your first game for example can be quite confusing. There’s a lot of options, rooms and stuff happening in-game that can be quite overwhelming for first-time players. Also later on, people hop rooms all the time, enter rooms and leave rooms, which can be a pain if you just want to play. To make this all easier we started thinking about: Quick Play.

Play Now

We want our users to have an easier option to jump into a game and just play. When you’re used to the game it’s no problem to start your own server or pick a good room from the lobby. However, especially for newcomers it has to start simple. Therefore we want to get them playing asap in just a regular...

Lag problems

Today I’m posting a small blog about our constant battle with lag, and what we have done to prevent it.
There are multiple things that are seen as lag:
Framerate lag
Network lag

I’ll focus on one at a time, starting with frame-rate lag

Frame-rate lag (or drop) is created when the game takes too long to draw or calculate the next frame.
A few examples of actions that could cause a slowdown:
A large amount of object creations, rendering a lot of layered transparent images, iterating over a very large loop, and rendering a lot of objects.
Of these possible slowdown’s, we have removed as many as possible by recycling used objects as much as possible and reduce the amount of objects that need to be drawn.
For example, every frame we would be making numerous objects to track events made by the user and received from the server (known as game events). Instead we now generate a large pool of...

Tell about the future of Curve Fever

Hey Curver, how are you?

The last few days have been a little bit different at the office. First of all we hired a graduate from the university in Ede. He is going to take on of most of the marketing tasks at Curve Fever. He’s also going to establish a new strategy for us. With his help we hope Curve Fever will get even bigger than it is already.

Beside him we are currently in the process of hiring a new programmer to come work at the office. We are searching for a passionate and smart programmer, who is great in programming, and in setting up the architecture for a program.
Are you a programmer and you are interested in working for Curve Fever? Send us your motivation letter, together with your CV to: iwant@curvefever.com!
For more information about the job, go to: http://curvefever.com/content/game-programmer-curve-fever-0.

If you still prefer playing Curve Fever more than...

The performance of Curve Fever

Happy New Year everybody! This is going to be the first blog post of the year. When we started the blog, we told that we would write every week. But soon it turned out that writing once a week is pretty time consuming. That is why we decided to not write once a week, but only once a month. We will recap what happened last month and our plans for upcoming month. And also to touch on one specific topic.

Performance of the game

This time I want to talk about the performance of the game. A player called Incred wrote on the 30th of December a very long post, called the 2015 Curve Fever Prep Talk!. Clearly this was a long post, and because I was very busy, I was not really in the mood to read it. But Imhoff pointed out to me that it was a really good post and that I should read it. And thus I began to read it carefully.
To sum it up, Incred makes two wishes in his post:

  1. Fix the...

New rankings

Last Friday we introduced a new ranking system. Not only does it feature a 1v1 ranking, it also features separate rankings for the European, American and Asian servers. We think it is a great addition for 1v1 players, and it should also get more players to play on their own cluster.

The reasons to do it

In the beginning of CF 2 we made the ranking system. The FFA rankings, and later the Team rankings. They worked very well for a long time, but over time some problems crept into the ranking system:

  1. FFA ranks were not representative anymore. To get high on the FFA ladder it was better to play 1v1 games, than to play FFA games. This more or less destroyed the meaning of the FFA rank. What should we do with 1v1 toppers now?
  2. Cheating with ranks In the game there is some cheating going on to get a higher rank. Most notable
    • Boosting in FFA (playing together in FFA).
    • Boosting in Team...

Developers blog for Curve Fever

Hi all,

Today we have our own development blog! Time for a party at the office. Now what to write about? mmmmmmooh…

Last week we asked you to participate in our survey, and so you did. We are currently processing the results, but one of the questions was about:

Would you like to know more about what the developers are doing?

The result is clear:
stats_news.png

60% of you wants to know more about what we are doing! Great.

Then we asked you:

What would you like to know?

stats_what.png

Clearly we can see that there is no personal interest in our lives. Only 16% of the respondents are interested in us, personally. So we are not going to bore you with stories about our private lives. We only want to answer one question which was asked in the other category of the same question:

What are your breakfast times?

  • Geert: at 8:00
  • HeLiX WaVe: at 8:30
  • zeroZshadow: at 7:00

What you would like to know, though, are...
